During May, Americans nationwide are observing National Older Americans’ Month and National Elder Law Month. The purpose of both of these observations is to direct everyone’s focus toward the seniors in their lives and communities, and the unique legal and financial challenges those seniors face as they continue to age.

National Older Americans’ Month was established by President John. F. Kennedy in 1963. At the time, only 17 million Americans in the U.S. reached their 65th birthdays, and nearly a third of all seniors were living in poverty. By establishing National Older Americans’ Month, the Kennedy Administration – which met with members of the National Council of Senior Citizens – sought to help Americans focus on the contributions and needs of past and current elders in the U.S., especially war veterans.

Among the needs that all senior citizens share are the unique legal needs that provide them with the means to live out the rest of their lives in peace and dignity. National Elder Law Month, then, is a time for seniors and their loved ones to address estate planning, long-term care planning, and elder abuse (which can affect seniors emotionally, financially, and physically).

If you are a senior citizen’s loved one, or a senior citizen yourself, May is a great time to consider the plans you currently have in place, if they can be improved, and the plans that you should make to ensure you are protected for the future.
